between offset layers or rock strata (ages indicated are in radiocarbon
years) indicates the offsets associated with individual earthquake
events. The younger layers show less offset (0.56 m) than the older
sediments (1.7 m) as they have been subject to fewer rupturing episodes.
In other words the 1.7 m offset of the oldest bed includes the 0.74
+ 0.56 m offsets of the younger beds (after Hancock 1988).
